Hints for using these mailing lists

Contributed by Kevin Appert - 08/03/2006

  1. Your message is important to us. Here are some hints at getting it across. It's worth your effort.

  2. Size - in order to block a class of unwanted messages from outside, the size limit was set at 20K. There appears to be a lot of overhead so an extended screed near that number might also bounce. Consider sending larger items to the webmaster for posting on the web site.

  3. Attachments - in order to make it less likely that outsiders will pass malware along to us, attachments have been banned. It's the same deal about sending it directly to the webmaster.

  4. Email addresses in body text or subject line - email addresses in the archive are harvested by spammers, so please replace the @ symbol with _at_ or something.

  5. Straight ASCII preferred. No RTF, no colors, just text. Some folks use bronze-age email clients to avoid an emailed trojan, some just don't like blinking red text. Also, RTF files are much larger than plain text, so see (1) above.

  6. Bounce messages - It's nothing personal. If you get one, don't let it offend or upset you. If your message is too large, cancel the post using the link in the bounce message and split or shorten it *. If there's some problem with permissions or persimmons, send your message to me and I'll post it for you and CC George Perry at geoperry@gamil.com. He will straighten out the problem so it won't happen again.

    * The alternative is to wait for the moderator to decide to allow the extra length. It may be a long wait.
